1st Mijikenda Cultural Gala 2025: A Historic Celebration of Heritage, Music & Unity
Kilifi Water Grounds — 27th December 2025
On 27th December 2025, the Water Grounds in Kilifi town came alive with music, dance, and cultural pride as the inaugural Mijikenda Cultural Gala took centre stage. The event marked a milestone in cultural celebration for the Mijikenda community — bringing together youth, artists, traditional custodians, and government officials in a vibrant showcase of identity and heritage.
Honouring a Legendary Icon
At the heart of the gala was a tribute to Joseph Ngala, widely known as Mzee Ngala Mwenyewe — the 90-year-old pioneer of Bango music, a coastal genre that blends jazz, taarab, Portuguese influence, and traditional rhythms unique to the Kenyan coast.
Under the theme “Celebrating Legendary Bango Music,” the gala recognised Ngala’s contribution to music and culture — not just as entertainment but as a cultural narrative woven into Mijikenda life.
Leadership & Attendance
The 1st Mijikenda Cultural Gala drew a mix of national and county leadership, media personalities, and cultural ambassadors, reaffirming broad support for the event’s vision of celebrating Mijikenda heritage:
- Principal Secretary for Youth Affairs & the Creative Economy, Fikirini Jacobs, officially inaugurated the gala and spoke on the role of culture in empowering youth and creatives.
- Governor of Kilifi County, Gideon Mung’aro — attended the gala, showing county support for preserving coastal cultural identity.
- Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho — confirmed present at the event through attendee posts.
- Member of Parliament Owen Baya — widely tagged and shown in live coverage of the gala, participating among official guests and community leaders.
- Radio presenters, local media personalities, and county government executives engaged throughout the evening, amplifying community engagement and coverage.
- Creative performers and cultural artists — featured in the line-up of music, dance, and performances honouring Mzee Ngala (Bango legend).
Cultural Significance
The Mijikenda Cultural Gala was conceived as more than just a musical event — it represents a conscious effort to reaffirm and protect Mijikenda identity, especially against the backdrop of long-standing local festivals such as Chendachenda, which officials say has lost cultural focus due to political interference over the years.
Stakeholders at the event stressed that this gala will be an annual cultural feature, designed to:
- Showcase and preserve the Mijikenda heritage, especially music, dance, and traditional arts;
- Empower creatives and youth with platforms to perform and network.
- Strengthen community cohesion and cultural tourism potential across Kilifi and the wider coastal region.
Community & Creative Sector Engagement
Beyond performances, the gala provided space for cultural entrepreneurs, art groups, and creative industry stakeholders to interact with government agencies present on site — including services geared toward supporting filmmaking and youth creative initiatives.
Looking Forward
Organizers aim for this gala to grow into a flagship cultural event on the Kenyan calendar — one that elevates local heritage, enhances cultural pride, and creates meaningful economic opportunities through tourism and creative industry development.
